The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
